The Fuchsia Blossom Lariat grew out of my passion for creating flowers from beads and was inspired by the fuchsia plant which is commonly used as a hanging summer plant on patios and decks in the lake area where I live. The original necklace (lariat) was designed in 2007. The Necklace was redesigned in 2019 to showcase the beauty of the blossom. The blossom petals are worked in diagonal peyote and attached with circular peyote. The necklace is worked in the author’s adaptation of tubular Ndebele stitch which does not utilize the traditional “step-up” at the beginning of each round. Brick stitch fronds are stitched for leaves. Complete instructions, illustrated in color, will guide you through the process.

Skill Level: All
Twist, turn, and turn once again to reveal four or more different patterns! Combining ideas from origami and engineering, the Kaleidocycle is an ingenious three-dimensional turning machine of hinged sets of triangles designed by the Contemporary Geometric Beadwork Project team. You will use peyote stitch to bead four triangle designs and then explore how multiples of the four designs relate to each other as they take their place within the Kaleidocycle structure. Six sets of four triangles, or a total of twenty four triangles, are needed to complete the Kaleidocycle. Students are asked to make and bring 24 completed beaded triangles to participant in the workshop. An illustrated tutorial for the triangle designs will be provided to registered students 6-8 weeks before the workshop. Class time will focus on triangle arrangement, assembly, and hinge construction. A packet of size 11 and size 15 black seed beads for creating hinges and joining the 24 triangles together into a Kaleidocycle will be provided with a written and illustrated project tutorial during the workshop.

Once fired at a high temperature, the binder is burned away leaving your silver metal piece. We will be using fine silver which is 99.9% pure silver, the same purity of silver traded in the Commodities Market. Participants will leave with a charm weighing up to 4.5 grams depending on size and texture. Cost payable to instructor at the event. Cost covers cost of silver, use of tools, consumables, and firing services NOTE: Students should allow time for their charm to be fired.

Skill Level: All
Some believe that we can better understand the world around us by observing numerical patterns in our daily lives. Numerologists believe personal numbers are also a spiritual practice that can help navigate our inner world as well as our outer world. Did you know your personal Life Path number is much more than your personality type? Whatever your belief system, playing with numbers artistically as both pattern and symbolism is downright interesting! During this class we’ll calculate your life path number, learn what that means and then create a personalized necklace in copper and bronze sheet metal to wear as a personal periapt. Metal stamps put the words, numbers or designs fully in your hands. Not into wearing your life path number? No worries. You can choose to stamp your power word instead. Metalworking techniques taught include properly and easily metal stamping into sheet metal, cutting sheet metal with shears rather than using a jeweler’s saw, proper filing, layering metal components with cold connections (without the use of fire or soldering), patination and wirewrapping. You’ll make the leather necklace using soft leather and also create your own wire clasp and wire end crimps using high quality wire. Supplies to bring: Round nose jewelry pliers Chain nose jewelry pliers Bail making pliers – The ones with three different mandrel sizes are great. Wubbers also has pliers in various sizes. I prefer the medium size for end caps and the large ones for clasps. . Small travel anvil or steel bench block Ball peen hammer. Can be a jewelry chasing hammer or a standard hardware store type ball peen, whatever you own and is comfortable for you to work with. Center punch – can be spring loaded or simple center punch Wire snips I small piece of extra fine steel wool Paper and pen to calculate your life path number Kit Fee $30 and includes use of Impress Art metal stamps, bronze wire from Parawire and leather from Leather Cord USA, copper and bronze sheet metal, use of instructor’s torches and butane gas, patina solutions, rivets and eyelets, crystal drop, copper washers. Links Clasps Components and ChainFebruary 6, 3:00pm - 6:00pmMixed Media Class By Jen CushmanClass Fee: $75.00 Kit fee of $30 paid to instructor in class
Skill Level: All
One of the most rewarding aspects about making your own jewelry is seeing your handiwork – the hand of the artist – in your finished pieces. Often times the maker will spend hours beading and stringing the perfect piece only to finish their jewelry with manufactured clasps or other findings. While there is nothing wrong with a well-placed clasp, there’s something beautiful and thrilling of creating your own work from start to finish. Learn wireworking techniques to take your jewelry to a new level with nothing more than a humble spool of copper wire (learn first in copper and then move up to finer grade metals). In this workshop you will easily hand manipulate dead soft wire into various types of links and chain them all together to create one seamless necklace. We will also make a couple of different styles of clasps for the perfect handmade closure. If you love organic looking jewelry you’ll enjoy this fun technique-filled workshop. Note: If you’re taking my Transformation necklace immediately before this workshop, you’lll have a nice jumpstart on the wirework techniques. However, in these three hours we’ll be taking wireworking to the next level with even more fun link and wire bead styles. Supplies to bring: Round nose jewelry pliers Chain nose jewelry pliers Bail making pliers – The ones with three different mandrel sizes are great. Wubbers also has pliers in various sizes. For chain making I prefer the medium size. The large ones are great for making clasps. Small travel anvil or steel bench block Ball peen hammer. Can be a jewelry chasing hammer or a standard hardware store type ball peen, whatever you own and is comfortable for you to work with. Wire snips I small piece of extra fine steel wool Kit Fee $30 and includes one roll of 16 gauge bare copper wire from Parawire, 10mm beads and crystals, vintage images, patina solution and one clear flat-backed crystal you can add to your necklace as a focal. To learn how to add imagery to the crystal please see my Transformation Necklace workshop as well. Questions? Email Jen Cushman at jencushmanart@gmail.com
