Modern Friction Tube Earrings
9:00am - 2:00pm
Modern Friction Tube EarringsFebruary 6, 9:00am - 2:00pmSee Other DatesMetal Clay Class By Carrie StoryClass Fee: $200.00
Skill Level: Intermediate
Intermediate. Some experience with metal clay or soldering is helpful but not required—come ready to learn and experiment.
Inspired by the iconic earrings worn by Rebecca in Ted Lasso, this workshop blends contemporary design with artisan techniques to create a pair of striking, modern friction tube earrings. These aren’t just statement earrings—they’re conversation starters.

In this hands-on class, students will begin by designing and forming their own fine silver metal clay elements to feature on the front and back of each earring. Once fired, you'll dive into precision fabrication techniques: filing, and bending sterling silver tubing using a pliers and miter vise, and learning how to solder the tube cleanly and securely to your fired clay components. From there, you'll fit and solder the 20g sterling wire, bend it into shape, and finish with polishing and optional patina.

What You'll Learn:

How to design and create fine silver components with metal clay

Tube filing, and bending techniques using .925 tubing

Soldering on metal clay

Techniques for friction-fit wire fabrication and shaping

Finishing, polishing, and patination for a modern, professional look

How to achieve balance, symmetry, and visual impact in wearable sculpture

Why Take This Class:
This is more than just a jewelry project—it's a deep dive into mixed media techniques that combine fine silver artistry with precision metalwork. You'll leave with a unique, high-impact pair of earrings and a versatile new skill set that bridges the gap between metal clay and traditional silversmithing. If you’re ready to take your jewelry to the next level, this class is for you.

Kit: Each student will receive Project X .999 15 grams, .925 tube and .925 wire. Kit fee is included in the registration price!

Skill Level: All
Once you have chosen your gemstone from a selection made available in class, you will make a
silver ring, texture it, attach it to your chain, add a bezel cup for a cabochon gemstone, and finally you will learn to polish your completed jewelry using affordable and approachable tools and techniques.

Soldering attachments to a fine chain is an art, and you will learn techniques to control the solder flow and to protect your chain from the heat of the torch.

You may supply your own gemstone, but it must be a calibrated 5 or 10 mm flat back cabochon stone, and it should not be too fragile. I do reserve the right to suggest your use of a class gemstone for learning!

You will construct the necklace from chain and wire using traditional metalsmithing techniques such as soldering, texturing, filing, stone setting, and polishing.

This class is appropriate for total beginners but also has much to offer a more advanced jewelry student.

All tools are provided but will be affordable and approachable options for the home jeweler.
You will receive comprehensive illustrated handouts for the class and a complete resource list. My teaching style and goal is for all my students to see a successful conclusion in a safe and fun learning environment. If you have any questions before enrolling, please email me at studiominerock@gmail.com .

Things to bring with you to class: any magnification you might need for close up work, plus a battery
operated task light if you want it—the classrooms at the show can be a little dimly lit!

Metalsmithing skills taught in this class:
Soldering
Wire shaping

Stone setting
Controlling solder flow
Protecting fine chain when soldering

In this class, you will transform a simple silver disc and a copper star into a show stopping mixed metal pendant, so useful in these days of soaring precious metal prices!

You will hammer texture your silver disc, and then learn how to “tin” your copper star to attach it to
your base silver disc. I will also show you several techniques for controlling solder flow. Once you have soldered on your copper star, we will fabricate a fine silver granule and add that to the center of the pendant for a final mixed metals flourish.

Once the pendant is complete, we will use a dapping block to shape it attractively and then you will
learn to polish your completed jewelry using affordable and approachable tools and techniques.

You will construct the necklace from sheet metal stampings using traditional metalsmithing techniques such as soldering, texturing, filing, and polishing.

Optional prerequisite is Rockin' Bezels, to get a jump on bezeling and design considerations, with support. No freeform experience needed, it is essentially peyote.
Description:

The central focal is a similar shape to a handheld mirror. The surreal cab of a woman with a castle on her head was selected in anticipation of European travel. Since castle pastures frequently have sheep, I took that thought and literally turned it on its head by adding a sheep to the bezel. Bead embroidery pairs well with freeform beading, it gives a more organic look that might not be achieved with other forms of beading. If you have some bead embroidery experience but haven't yet combined it with freeform, try this beginner-friendly project. Focal elements will be bezeled and then assembled via freeform peyote and a spiral peyote neckband.

Duration: 5 hours with break.

Techniques: Peyote bezels, flat peyote, and spiral peyote, brick stitch edging for bead embroidered components.

Kits are not required but will be available. Green Castle Kits include the mirror-shaped central focal with cylinder beads to bezel it, two cabochons for star-shaped bead woven focals, a seed bead mix pack and lobster claw closure. Bead mix packs contain 15-11-10-8/0 seed beads, chips and miscellaneous bits for interest. Not included in the kit: Stones 22-28mm (please bring your own focals in the color theme) and the sheep is optional.

Skill Level: All
This class is appropriate for total beginners but also has much to offer a more advanced jewelry student.

In this class, you will learn how to create a tube set gemstone pendant in silver using just a butane
torch--simple equipment you can safely use at home.

Once you have chosen your gemstone from a selection made available in class, you will create this entire pendant. Using a purchased tube setting, you will also add a faceted gem to your pendant, and finally you will learn to polish your completed jewelry using affordable and approachable tools and techniques.

You may supply your own gemstone, but it must be a calibrated 5 mm faceted round stone, and it
should not be too fragile. I do reserve the right to suggest your use of a class gemstone for learning!

You will construct the pendant from sheet and wire using traditional metalsmithing techniques such as soldering, texturing, filing, stone setting, and polishing.

All tools are provided but will be affordable and approachable options for the home jeweler.
You will receive comprehensive illustrated handouts for the class and a list of tools for purchase if you choose. My teaching style and goal is for all my students to see a successful conclusion in a safe and fun learning environment. If you have any questions before enrolling, please email me at
studiominerock@gmail.com .

Skill Level: All
This class is appropriate for total beginners but also has much to offer a more advanced jewelry student.
This class is a full six hours so that a small group (enrollment is limited to eight) of students can be
carefully and calmly coached through a simple series of steps that combine to create a
sophisticated piece of jewelry. We will take a short break at a mutually agreed upon time in the middle of the day.

Once you have chosen your gemstone from a selection made available in class, you will create this entire pendant, including the bezel, the background texture, and the bail. You may supply your own gemstone, but it must be a flat back cabochon stone, and it should not be too big or too fragile. I do reserve the right to suggest your use of a class gemstone for learning!

Using a custom fabricated bezel, you will set a cabochon gem on your pendant, and finally you will learn to make your own bail and to suspend your pendant kinetically from its chain using a heat riveting technique.

You will construct the pendant from sheet and wire using traditional metalsmithing techniques such as soldering, texturing, filing, granulation, stone setting, and polishing.

All tools are provided but will be affordable and approachable options for the home jeweler.

You will receive comprehensive illustrated handouts for the class, along with complete
resource lists. My teaching style and goal is for all my students to see a successful conclusion in a safe and fun learning environment. If you have any questions before enrolling, please email me at

Things to bring with you to class: any magnification you might need for close work, plus a battery-

If you have any questions before enrolling, please email me at
studiominerock@gmail.com .

Things to bring with you to class: any magnification you might need for close work, plus a battery-
operated task light if you want it—the classrooms at the show can be a little dimly lit!

Metalsmithing skills taught in this class:
Make a custom bezel for any stone
Solder bezel to base
Hammer texturing
Create a riveted foldover bail

Things to bring with you to class: any magnification you might need for close work, plus a battery-
operated task light if you want it—the classrooms at the show can be a little dimly lit!

Soldering
Filing
Texturing
Calibrated faceted gemstone setting

This class is appropriate for total beginners but also has much to offer a more advanced jewelry student.

All tools are provided but will be affordable and approachable options for the home jeweler.
